Visa & Entry

Citizens of the United States and 26 EU member states can enter Georgia visa-free and stay for up to a full year with just a valid passport (EU citizens may also use a national ID card). Other nationalities should check Georgia’s official consular portal for e-visa or embassy requirements before traveling.

Currency

The local currency is the Georgian Lari (GEL). Cards are accepted in Mestia, but bring cash for guesthouses and meals in smaller villages along the trek, where ATMs are limited.

Best Time to Trek

The reliable trekking window for Svaneti’s high passes is early July to early October. Snow and avalanche risk are elevated on the higher passes before mid-June and after early October, and spring treks are best avoided altogether. Expect warm days, cold nights at altitude, and the occasional sudden storm.

Safety Basics

This route crosses high mountain passes, so check current conditions before you go, carry layers for rapid weather changes, and build in buffer days around the shoulder season. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the steep descents.
